Classical Armchair
A Rare American Classical Carved Mahogany Armchair, early 19th c., New York, of generous size, architectonic crest rail, columnar stiles, padded arms with rosette terminals, tapered paneled uprights and legs, casters. The architectonic aspect, finely chosen veneers and ornamental details on this chair relate closely to examples produced by well-known New York makers. The refined molding on the seat rail and legs and the outsized arm pads seen here are similar to those on a armchair for the North Carolina State House by John and Thomas Constantine and an armchair by Duncan Phyfe and Sons in the collection of Glorianna H. Gibbon.
