Eagle Breakfast Table

Reminiscent in form of the “Masterpiece” eagle carved pedestal card table in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, attributed to Duncan Phyfe, circa 1820 ( pictured and described in The New Fine Points of Furniture: Early American, Albert Sack, 1993). This is certainly one of, if not the most highly developed New York Classical mahogany breakfast or library tables known. Carved eagle heads and full wings support the concave edged base. The top supports are carved cornucopia ending in hairy paw feet. Carved drops hang at the corners and sheaves of wheat adorn the center of the base. Single drawer, original pull.

A gaming table by the same maker is pictured in Antiques Magazine, February 1976, opposite the inside cover, in a David Stockwell advertisement.  Stockwell attributes their table to H.Lannuier or his successor, John Gruez. One last related example worth mentioning is a card table in the New York State Museum that graces the cover of the publication, New York Furniture, 1788 -1825, by John Scherer, 1988, attributed to Michael Allison based on a nearly identical labeled example.

As with all of our furniture, in ‘as found’ condition.
