Six Dining Chairs

Set of six Gothic/Classical New York side chairs, circa 1845, J.and J.W. Meeks or A.and F. Roux. Chairs of this form are pictured in the famous A.H Ritchie (after Francis B. Carpenter) steel engraving, The First Reading of The Emancipation Proclamation Before the Cabinet, and also in an 1864 sketch by a C.K. Stellwagan of the Cabinet Room, property of the Western Reserve Historical Society. Several of those chairs remain in the Lincoln bedroom of the White House. Although pairs of this type have become available, a set of six is most unusual. The highest style of this form, having serpentine seat fronts and front leg castors. The chairs of this set appear to utilize both mahogany and walnut.

As with all of our furniture, in ‘as found’ condition.
Very nice overall condition.
